Kick butt in Spanish
You know most Spanish classes teach you everything… but when you finish you can’t do anything. Here’s what I mean. It’s all there in the class, all the verb conjugations, subjunctive modes, irregular verbs and on and on and on. Yet, not 1 out of 20 people who take those classes get to speak any real Spanish.
Everything is covered theoretically but there is no practical mastery. So you can’t actually use what you learned to make your life better.
Theory is great if you want to pass an exam. Plus, you get a nice certificate to put on your wall. But if you want or need to speak to anybody, theory is the smallest part of the Spanish puzzle.
If you want to visit a Spanish speaking country it won’t help you very much.
And if you live in Spanish speaking country, thinking about theory can make you so hesitant and slow at speaking that it’s a real effort for anyone to listen to you.
Having a certificate is all good and well, but having command of Spanish is really what it’s all about.
Being able to say what you want to say in Spanish is fantastic.
Why be a wallflower too scared to open your mouth? When command of Spanish would give you the confidence you needto express yourself.
So how do you get this command of the Spanish?
I had a really good aha moment about this in my karate class last night.
I know it sounds strange but learning to speak Spanish boldly is a lot like learning karate. The confidence to speak up comes from knowing you can do it. And knowing you can do it comes from having done it.
Makes sense right?
Last night in the class, we spent the whole night practicing just one block and one counter punch.
You’d think practicing just two moves would be boring, but it was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever had…
I came away feeling great.
Instead of learning 20 different blocks and countering with a punch, kick, chop, elbow, etc., and doing them all badly, we just got really good at doing one thing.
And you know what?
I feel sure I could apply it if I got in a nasty situation.
Now hopefully you won’t ever need your Spanish in any nasty situations. Learning Spanish is a more likely to bring you great joy. It’s a great skill to have, a way to meet new people, make new friends and live new adventures.
But to get everything that speaking Spanish can bring to your life you need command of the language.
And the only way to do it is a lot like the way I learn karate.
Instead of trying to learn everything and learning nothing, like with typical verb charts. You just need to master small parts of the language that really matter. Then before long, you’ll find yourself speaking more and more Spanish in clear and flowing sentences.
You don’t need to learn all of 100 plus verb conjugations at once. Most of them you’ll never use anyway. Instead why not learn first the ones that get you speaking the most Spanish.
In fact, just a handful of the most common Spanish verb patterns are used in 80% of conversation.
By learning the frequently used patterns first, and learning them well, all the confusion disappears from learning Spanish. And so does the 19 out of 20 failure rate.
That’s right, 19 out of 20 people who take traditional Spanish classes never get to speak the language. Yet, by learning one common verb pattern at a time, anyone can learn to speak fluent Spanish.
Best of all, just like the block and counter I learned to execute in the karate class, you can learn to use Spanish verbs instinctively. You can learn how to say what you want to say instantly.
Right now, I am going to show the first very easy step…
We’ll start slowly with just one simple verb conjugation, that way you’ll get a feel of really using the language. Best of all, once you master this easy step, you can use it with 80% of the verbs you already know.
To do this lesson… this is all the theory you need to know
AR verbs change to O to make the first person, for example…
| Ar verb | 1st person | ||
| Trabajar | To work | Trabajo | I work |
| Tomar | To drink | Tomo | I drink |
| Comprar | To buy | Compro | I buy |
| Gastar | To spend | Gasto | I spend |
| Llegar | To arrive | Llego | I arrive |
| Cocinar | To cook | Cocino | I cook |
| Preparar | To prepare | Preparo | I prepare |
Here’s the first Bola de Nieve Spanish Audio Lesson for you.
Now go speak some Spanish, it’s easier than you think to build fluency. Then let me know your thoughts on this easy approach to Spanish verbs conjugations by leaving a comment below.

I’m still working through the plural statements of synergy. Have to get some more pads on (words and patterns learned) before I can begin throwing (punches/words) around.
It’s a good approach to learning the language. Will there be other lessons? What about the er verbs and the ir verbs. I would like lessons in these verbs as well. Thank you for sending me this lesson.
I am having difficulty downloading the first lesson. Nothing is happening, I just get a blank page. Help.!
I have soon finished going through - and memorizing without difficulties - the 14 CD of your Synergyspanish course.
However I find that when with my Mexican family I want to use all what I have learned I am somehow stuck, having difficulties finding my words. I am sure your Bola de Nieve is the ideal follow up. Kindly give me more infos…

I will be again in Mexico in August when my daughter who now lives there will give birth to my first grand’daughter, so I have to get fluent quick !!!
Marcus, I know I’ve said this before but your approach to teaching Spanish is the easiest that I have come across. I love it. I have completed the Synergy Spanish course and have been talking Spanish with my Spanish speaking friends at every opportunity. I can’t wait for my next vacation in Cuba in three weeks time! Thanks to you, I’ll be able to communicate with the locals this time round.
Hi Marcus,
I love the course, attended regular spanish classes at the same time I started your course and am way ahead of anyone else in the class. Looking forward to my next visit to Spain.
Marcus. I agree with Ken Harris. I am only at lessons 10 of the Synergy course and I started already to be bold in speaking Spanish with strangers in the store. I repeat words and phrases some 6 hours a day. I translate from english to spanish in writing every day. In Karate, you have worked at a mouvement again and again until you mastered it. Excellent advice. Thanks for stressing the point that …success will come …if we use all the tools you are sending our way. After listening to the Bola de Nieve Spanish, it gives me the desire to learn even more every day. Quiero hablar mucho español pronto, porque voy a ir a Madrid en el fin de año. Gracias por sus ayuda.
Hi Marcus
I purchased your Synergy Spanish course about 6 weeks ago, having struggled with another more expensive course for the the previous 9 months. The previous course taught me many words, and attempted to teach me conjugations of regular and irregular verbs in at least 6 tenses.I nearly gave up because i was totally confused. Your approach is simple and practical and I even managed a few sentences during a holiday in the Canaries earlier in March.
Please send other lessons in this series.
Thanks it works for me. It is rather easy. I appreciate your continued emails. They are great. I will be heading to Peru in a couple of months. It has worked great for me. Especially in November and February I spent in these months in Colombia.
Hi Marcus and many thanks for the continued support, like so many others I have tried other courses all to no avail and whilst I am probably your slowest pupil (time and work) I know my progress here is so much quicker than any other method I have tried. My buddy at work who did a six week intensive course in spanish does not have the confidence to talk with me, I of course told him to visit your site
I took nearly all of Marcus’ courses and I continue to use what I learned from his methods and tips on a daily basis here in Lima, Peru. A couple of years ago I knew nothing. Now I can converse freely, go anywhere with confidence, and operate independently. Muchas gracias para todo!!
Don’t forget those of us who learn quickly! I like Synergy Spanish because I can have a new lesson or two a day, WITHOUT endless repetition, which has sent me away from other courses too bored to finish. There’s just enough repetition in Synergy to allow for practice, without being held back when you’re chomping at the bit for more. And, those who do need more practice, can always repeat each lesson, etc.
Hi Marcus I love your term of phrase. I’m getting there very slowly but you are a great help to me and I’m very grateful. Thank you.
Marcus,
Loved the lesson. Simple, practical.

All that you do is helpful. This simple approach seems to make very good sense. Now one needs opportunity to put the language into practice. Thank you Marcus.
tried to download the Bola de Nieve Spanish Audio Lesson, but for some reason it doesn’t work. Maybe there is some way to get the file?
Why don’t you just sell the Bola de Nieve like you do Synergy Spanish? I am ready to move on, but the Bola class is full, and besides, it is a little pricey compared to Synergy Spanish. I believe alot of people are wondering the same thing.
Tried to download Bola de Nieve audio–just got an blank screen. Any ideas?
At age 78, I am finally beginning to speak Spanish, thanks to your course.
I am having difficulty downloading the first lesson. Nothing is happening, I just get a blank page

I think its great that you can compare the two and the irony of the two,and it is so true how the one links up with the other.I am truly grateful for all the lesson you have been able to send me and look forward to this one.
Keep them coming as it is very much appreciated.
Kind regards.

Hola Marcus Thank you so much for this Bola de nieve lesson it is so great - your lessons I download very easily - what I have done is gone over the synergy lessons again and like you say with the Karate i am doing over and over again slowly to get to know it better - when i visit my daughter in New Zealand then i will also log onto this to give to my granddaughter to learn - i do it easier in writing so i will have to get going with speaking it - here where i live in South Africa i do not have anyone to practice with can you help that i can maybe contact someone to try my Spanish - i will also visit my son in Mackay in Australia and he has a couple with whom he is friends with so i will also try my Spanish with them. I love your approach to Spanish i understand a lot when reading spanish that i come across on the internet - thanks to you and your easy method it really is super learning and thanks for taking the time and trouble in writing to me. Love and best wishes

Hi Marcus
Thank you for the e.mail today it was again the gentle push I needed and also the reasurrance that I can learn Spanish.
Hi Marcus, I am really enjoying your course and have started to put sentences together, however as I live in Spain I just cannot understand when the Spanish talk back to me, any idea how to get over this.
Your comments are always brilliant. Thanks.
Your tricks are always brilliant and a great building block for the language.
Hello,
I have been practicing using your wedsite for a bit and it has really been helpful..I can’t get the link open for the audio lesson but will continue to try. I will certainly try the new approach..Thank you.
thanks Marcus for your dedication and persistency. i have studied spanish off and on for years and truly desire to become fluent. your method of teaching is the very best that i’ve been exposed to. i have taken spanish in college and i know that your numbers are right 1/20.thanks for the emails.i plan to purchase all of your courses because i know that your method is the one to get me to fluency.

I am a traveler as a missionary and wasted lots of $ learning all the grammar. I need to talk. How do I sign up. I’ve already taken your Synergy and feel ready to go with the latest.
God Bless you and your willing to help heart.
Thanks Marcus for the lesson. I have been studying spanish for several years but still have problem actually speaking. Dont have much opportunity of hearing the language and speaking it. Maybe your course will help me, will have to look into buying it if this lesson is anything to go by.
Muchas gracias.
Marcus, your lessons are absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much.I have many Spanish speaking friends both from Spain and Latin America. They want to know where I got such a good accent and I told them I got it from your audios. Thanks again, Bernie
Thanks for the lesson. I liked the simple, direct approach and think it really helps.
hi Marcus,
i really agree with what you are saying that it is important to practice spanish regardless of wrong grammar because at some point somhow, people will really punch at us and they want us to open our mouth. i have expereinced that when i went for the first time in the HIspanic community. thanks by the way for your inspiring message and advice.
muchas gracias y saludos,
fransiskus
Hi Marcus,
I tried to open the link but keep getting error on page. I am on lesson eight with Bola Nieve and am enjoying learning with each new lesson. I still lack confidence in speaking to my spanish friends at work, (I think it may have to do with my Irish accent)…..but I try. Thanks again for a wonderful and easy way to learn
Marie
Muchas gracias otra vez, Marcus! Siempre disfruto sus lecciones; me encanta sus audios.
Para mi, leer y escribir son mas facil que hablar. Hasta luego,
Cynthia
Hola Marcus,
He utalisado tu metoda para aprender espanol muy bien. Despues de tu kurso he vivido unas semanas en Peru y he tomado lecciones individuales.
Gracias
It is very pity that everybody here speaks some spanish but write only in English.
Hola Marcus,
Ju0st downloaded Bola Nieve audio and it looks as if it will be a tremendous help.
Thank you for simplifying the system. I gave this a quick run through and expect immense improvement in thre future.
Gracias,
Vern Clary
Gracias Marcus it’s very iterested lesson we used in our daily life. Again mil Gracias and all the best wish in the Easter for all. Fro Mounir.Adio’s a la proxima .
Hi Marcus:
I really enjoyed your synergy spanish course. I finished all twenty-five leasons, and I have no problem writing the sentences in spanish. The way you have the spanish words pronounced, makes it easy to know how to spell the words correctly. I am a little slow in speaking the sentences, but I’m sure with mucho practicar that I will be speaking it a lot faster.
Thank you for the free Bola de Nieve spanish lesson. It is so easy to speak the sentences in first person. Voy a visitar Lima, Pero en dos dias con mi familia por dos semana y quiero poder hablar espanol alla con mi new amigos.
Gracias
It is just great that is all i like to say. Kick butt learning Spanish Marcus’s way……
tank you. Tufan
Hi Marcus,
I am finding the course on Synergy Spanish very easy to learn, and I am half way through the book.
i am retiring on April 23rd, so I will have more time to study, so if you can send me the Bola de Nieve course ,I would be very interested,
I’m enjoying every minute of it! What a great way to learn conversational Spanish!
From Peter Collins, here in the U.K
Your explanation is very good and makes learning becoming a pleasure rather than a chore.
Gracias

Once again…This is the easiest way to learn Spanish I have ever seen…Thanks Marcos.
I was getting frustrated again…..I am trying to become proficient in Spanish as being bilingual in todays poor economy is almost a must. Gives me another tool to use in my job search… Thanks again….Ed

I like what I hear, but I am more comfortable being able to see the words as well, as in Rossetta.
I do need to balance the Rosetta with probably the Synergy program, to have a more complete study program.
The basic verbs and nouns, and working expressions is what I want to focus on……….tell me what to do
There’s a real problem with getting mail in the city of Panama, country thereof, things go astray.

I am still trying to figure out what comes next after the first Synergy Spanish Book. I completed these lessons, found them extremely helpful, but want to build on this with your materials.
Hi Marcus,
thank’s for your interesting lessons. i will learn lots of the spanish grammar.
Hi marcus,
I never purchased the first info from you yet due to work load and no free time and personal life issues, I never forgot. I will when the time is right. thanks
Thanks for sending me the hints and tips, it proves i am on the right track….. I completed it with confidence…
Its true what you suggest, to keep repeating it over and over again, that for me is the only way to remember, it might not work for everyone, but for me it does…Thanks once again
wow!!! Im going places with my spanish. I hear myself improving almost daily. Thanks Marcus.
Had learnt a lot from previous lessons but can’t get Bola de Nieve to download.

Hello Marcus. Muchas gracias por las neuvas lecciones. I could not have done that before getting your courses.
I find it difficult to discipline myself to allocate time to learning Spanish so I am still going over the first lessons. I think this way of learning verbs is interesting but, from my pont of view, there was too much vocabulary to learn - entirely my fault as I am so bad at making myself listen to the first course. I think now that it’s high time I did! Bit late for a New Year’s resolution - I’ll make it a Spring one!
[…] I have for you an all new lessons. It takes this foundation lesson […]
I need more guide lines to learn bcz I want to learn this language so let me know what should I do learn this language in short time.
your methods are good ,i compare them with my Spanish teacher who teaches grammar all the time ;i find them interesting and educative.very first for me to speak Spanish.
thank you. I liked this lesson
I am 81 years old and you gotta keep it simple and quick or it won’t work for us old people.
Thalnks Bob
I think you will confuse your students if you tell them that TOMAR means to drink.
TOMAR means to take and although it can be used with the meaning to take something to eat or drink (as in the english usage to “partake of” ) it can also mean- to take-in a more feneral
sense
can;t get the first lesson
I am a missionary in Nicaragua. Your synergy course has been a big help. and I feel your new approach of focusing on choice words is a great approach. I feel your choice of words to focus on could be better. One ar verb I use constantly is necesitar, need , llamar to call, hablar to speak or say,
I never use gastar or tomar. They are good to know but for beginning verbs i don’t think they are as important. Of course the verbs needed depends on the purpose one is going to a spanish speaking country. I use ensenar all the time because I teach English to beginners.
Asi, Gracias para aydame en espanol . Necesito mas!

GRACIAS MARCUS POR LA LECCION, ME GUSTA MUCHO.SALUDO JUDITH
hi i love learning spanish
Thank you for your Spanish lessons! I am particularly pleased because I have a sick husband and cannot attend my U3A Spanish conversation classes any more! This way I can still keep it up…

Ola Marcus Yo tiene 84 cumpleaños y no creer este posible, pero con su ayuda y “perseverence” it is beguinning to gel, gracias, vern clary
I have taken many Spanish classes and I find your presentation very clear to
learn and fun to follow. Thank you for the lesson one .
LM
Thankyou nice and easy to understand and use as always. Michael.
Marcus, here is an unusual comment.Of course I commend all that has been said about your courses.
I was unnerved to find a noise in the back of my Lexus car- a bumping noise that i thought spelled some serious defect. One day, however I heard it with engine off as I listened to one of your discs and I realized it is probably when the microphone is placed on a hard suface just after use
It doesn’t affect my Spanish learning but i thought you’d like to know

me gusta la lección { The snow ball } que acabo de estudiar. Me gustaríán más lecciones de las bolas de nievas. No tengo mucho tiempo para estudiar las lecciones, pero me gustan muchas. Gracias Carlos Santamaría.

Hola Marcus, solely due to work and sick Wife(MS) I am slowly gaining confidence with my Synergy Spanish and noted a comment in one of your blogs that one of your students reckons he/she(el o ella) is your slowest pupil, at least I have an equal ! If I could spend more time on it I know I can learn as your course is like a breath of fresh air compared to other previous attempts, but I will get to the heights acheived by many of your other pupils. I have simply to learn within my lifestyle capabilities,(Hecho de la vida-pienso),Look forward to all your e/mails,they just get more and more interesting.
Muchas gracias, Bill
Marcus,
I am a long time student of yours. I have studied synergy spanish, short cut to spanish 1 and 2. I am wanting to know if there is going to be a shortcut to spanish level 3. If so could you keep me informed. I am familiar with your on line course but I just cannot afford it. I have enjoyed your courses very much and am making some progress, although I am a pretty slow learner.
Thanks for all your help.
